UC Davis wins home game

UC Davis came away victorious in their first home game of the season with a 24-10 win over Long Island, evening its record to 3-3. Junior Anna Geissbuhler scored five goals and had four assists, tying her career best established at Fresno last year. Freshman Charlotte Morris added four goals, while freshman Elizabeth Landry and juniors Elizabeth Datino and Hannah Mirza chipped in three apiece. “The team was very balanced and gave a solid effort,” coach Elaine Jones said. UC Davis and Long Island collectively scored 11 goals in the first 10 minutes. Datino scored the game’s first goal and the Aggies jumped to a 5-1 lead in the first four minutes. The Blackbirds responded with two scores of their own to pull within two, only to have Geissbuhler score back-to-back goals and assist Morris to take a commanding lead of 8-3. Teams: UC Davis vs. Long Island Records: Aggies, 2-3; Blackbirds, 0-3 Where: Aggie Stadium When:  Sunday at 1 p.m. Who to watch: Freshman Elizabeth Landry should be on her game on Sunday, as she has been building momentum over the last two contests. Landry scored two goals against Davidson last Thursday and added a hat-trick on five shots against Virginia Tech on Saturday. Did you know? The Aggies defeated the Blackbirds 9-2 when the teams met last March. Hannah Mirza scored six goals in the match-up, while Anna Geissbuhler added three. Elizabeth Datino chipped in four assists. Preview: After playing their first five games on away from Aggie Stadium, the Aggies will finally play their home opener on Sunday. The match is one of just two home games for the Aggies in March, with the second coming on March 18 against Central Connecticut. Lacrosse The Aggies opened their week with a 22-14 loss to High Point on Wednesday. Junior attacker Elizabeth Datino tallied five goals while freshman Charlotte Morris added four assists, but the High Point Panthers were able to come away with a win due to an overwhelming second-half performance and 17 total steals. Datino’s performance marks the third straight game she has led the Aggies in scoring. Juniors Stephanie Guercio and Hannah Mirza each chipped in two goals, while Anna Geissbuhler added a goal and two assists. The loss was the highest scoring contest that UC Davis has played since its victory against Colorado State in 2004. The Aggies’ woes continued with a 15-10 loss to Davidson on Tuesday. Freshman Annie Lehner scored her first career hat trick while sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Majka saved 9 of the 26 shots she faced. Lacrosse UC Davis continued its early season success with a 16-13 win over rival Saint Mary’s. The Aggies moved to 2-0 on the season with both of their wins coming in against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents. Elizabeth Datino’s six goals matched her career-high performances against Detroit and Bryant in March 2011. Freshman Landry and Morris chipped in two and three goals, respectively and added two assists apiece. After trailing the Gaels 4-3 in the first 13 minutes, the Aggies answered with the five goals to claim an 8-4 lead. UC Davis led by 8-5 at the halftime, but was unable to contain the Gael comeback as Saint Mary’s cut the Aggie lead to 10-9. The team regrouped and Datino answered with an eight-meter goal to make it 11-9, but Gaels’ junior transfer Amanda Cross netted three straight to give Saint Mary’s a 12-11 advantage. UC Davis wins the season opener

UC Davis’ strong 18-7 victory over San Diego Sate on Sunday displayed hope for a promising season. The Aggies dominated the game from the start with three goals in the first four minutes. Elizabeth Datino tallied four goals and two assists while Hannah Mirza added a hat trick. Teammates Stephanie Guercio, Lauren Nardi, Charlotte Morris and Allie Lehner each contributed two goals. “I am pleased with the efforts of Datino and Mirza,” said coach Elaine Jones. “They played well on the field [Sunday].” The Aggies never trailed in the contest. San Diego State nearly tied the game at 6-5. However, shortly after, Guercio hit a short-handed goal and Datino followed with a net. After almost 10 scoreless minutes, Nardi hit two goals in the 42nd and 44th minutes, pushing the lead to a 10-5 margin. Morri’s two goals in the later half solidified the Aggies’ 6-0 run. UC Davis outshot San Diego State by a 40-24 margin –– 22-11 in the first half, also successfully clearing 10 of 11 transitions.... ...
