UC Davis men’s golf team lands bid at Regionals

After a one-year hiatus, the UC Davis men’s golf team is back in the NCAA Regional tournament. The Aggies heard about their at-large bid after it was announced on the Golf Channel early on May 5. UC Davis knew that they had a great shot at getting into the tournament, especially after winning the El Macero Classic and finishing second in the Big West tournament. The Aggies were also ranked No. 62 in the nation. Eighty-one teams were selected for the NCAA tournament. On May 15, the Aggies will head to Auburn, Ala. to compete in the regional round. They will face competitors like No. 1 Alabama, No. 12 Virginia Tech, and No. 13 Texas. Resident Big West champion senior Matt Hansen didn’t seem worried about making it into the tournament. “I knew where our ranking was and I wasn’t too worried,” Hansen said. “Because of where our ranking was, we would have to be really unlucky to not get in.” Hansen represents the Aggies’ best hope for a victory... ...

Men’s golf takes second in shortened Big West Tournament

Threatened by winds reaching 40 miles per hour, the third day of the men’s golf Big West Tournament was canceled, leaving the Aggies with a second place finish. UC Davis was led by senior Matt Hansen, who built on a victory in the El Macero Classic by taking first place honors. Hansen ended the two days of play eight under par, led by 12 birdies and just four bogies. He finished with an impressive five-shot lead over the second place finisher. The individual win gave Hansen three for his impressive career as an Aggie. “That was an absolutely dominant performance,” said head coach Cy Williams. “I’m very proud what he’s done the last two weeks. He’s really put the team on his shoulders.” The Aggies’ first day was led by a strong 5-under 67 by Hansen as well as a 2-under 70 by freshman Nicholas Noya who finished the day tied for fourth place. Noya, like Hansen, is coming off of an extremely strong performance in the El Macero Classic.... ...

Athlete of the Quarter: Honorable Mention

Not much was expected from the UC Davis men’s golf program, as it was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Sophomore Matt Seramin had other plans for the Aggies for the 2011-2012 season. Seramin stepped up to the tee in UC Davis’ time of need, leading the Aggies to their second straight Big West Conference title. The sophomore had only a couple of rounds of college competition from last year, so his talents began to show later in the season as he gained experience. The San Geronimo, Calif. native fired a three under par over the three-round competition to tie for fourth place individually at the Big West Championship. Seramin had two individual top-five finishes over the season, both coming in consecutive weeks. The week before he finished fourth at the Big West, he placed second at the Winchester Classic in Meadow Vista, Calif. with a one over par. — Matthew Yuen ...

Men’s Golf preview

Event: NCAA West Regional Where: Stanford Golf Course — Palo Alto, Calif. When: Thursday through Saturday, all day Who to Watch: Matt Hansen competed in the NCAA West Regional last year and showed no signs of first-year jitters. The Los Osos, Calif. native made quite an impression at last year’s regionals hosted by Arizona, where he shot a nine-under to win the individual title. Hansen has shown no signs of a sophomore slump and could be a solid contender for the title once again this season. Did you know? It should not have been a surprise that the UC Davis men’s golf program won the Big West Conference Championship this year, seeing that it was the third time in four seasons. And yet, when the Aggies seized the conference title, it was very unexpected. UC Davis brought a squad of three freshmen and two sophomores to the tournament with Hansen being the sole Aggie with prior Big West experience. Sophomore Matt Seramin led the way for UC Davis — drilling a... ...

Column: Play ball!

Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time for laying out on the Quad, Picnic Day and yes, Major League Baseball. By the time this reaches print, baseball will have already gone through Opening Day (or it’s “second Opening Day” depending on your perspective), and that makes this the perfect time to explore which UC Davis teams match up with squads from the Major Leagues. Baseball: Since we’re comparing UC Davis to the MLB, it seems only natural to begin with the UC Davis baseball team. And my diagnosis will make part of this campus smile and the other parts curse in their chairs. UC Davis baseball provides a striking resemblance to the San Francisco Giants. Both teams will be carried by their pitching staffs, and just as the Giants tout the starting abilities of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner, the Aggies lean heavily on Dayne Quist, Anthony Kubpens and Tom Briner. The UC Davis trio may never receive any Cy Young consideration, but if the... ...
