Aggie seniors go out on top

There could not have been a more fitting ending. Senior Betsy Sedlak recorded the block to give UC Davis a 3-0 win over Pacific, drawing cheers from the crowd as the Aggies finished their season with a victory. It was the final game in the career of both Sedlak, who leads UC Davis in career hitting percentage at .336, and fellow senior Katie Denny, who has been a fixture of the UC Davis lineup for four years. The match got off to a bit of a rocky start for the Aggies, but they battled Pacific to secure a 25-21 victory in the first set. Teams: UC Davis vs. Pacific Records: Aggies, 20-10 (6-9); Tigers, 17-11 (8-7) Where: The Pavilion When:  Saturday at 7 p.m. Who to watch: While Saturday may be senior night, sophomore Jenny Woolway will be looking to shine in the final game of the 2011 season. The San Diego, Calif. native is currently second in the Big West Conference in Assists per set with 10.71. Woolway also ranks second on the Aggies with 303 digs this season. Did you know? Pacific is the only Big West opponent that UC Davis has beaten on the road this season. The Aggies defeated the Tigers 3-0 on Sept. 21, in the team’s first conference match of the season. Home heartbreak

 It was the venue that had been the Aggies’ friend all year. The UC Davis volleyball team had not lost a game in the Pavilion this season, and it entered the weekend ready to keep its homecourt momentum going against some tough opponents. Unfortunately for the Aggies, all that changed this week. UC Davis started off Friday with a 3-2 loss to Cal State Fullerton in a hard fought match. The Aggies then followed that with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Big West Conference leaders Long Beach State. With the pair of losses, the Aggies moved to 20-10 on the year, 6-9 in conference play. Friday — Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Davis 2 The Aggies got off to the start they were looking for against the Titans. Volleyball UC Davis’ struggles on the road continued this weekend as the Aggies fell to Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside — both matches finished 3-0. The defeats extended UC Davis’ road losing streak to seven matches. Over that stretch the Aggies have won just three sets. UC Davis fell to 20-8 on the season, 6-7 in Big West play. The Aggies are currently fifth-place in the conference. Sophomore Devon Damelio led the Aggies with nine kills against CSU Northridge, while senior Betsy Sedlak added eight. Demelio also added nine digs while juniors Allison Whitson and Caroline Mercado tallied seven digs apiece. Whitson paced the Aggies with 16 kills against UC Riverside. Mercado posted nine digs while Whitson and fellow junior Kaitlyn Plum notched six each. UC Riverside tallied nine aces in the match.
